Who is this course for?

This course is for anyone who needs to complete general construction induction training before starting construction work. You might be starting a new job, moving into construction from another industry or completing training requested by your employer.

What you will learn

  • Recognise common construction hazards and understand how risks are controlled.
  • Understand your own responsibilities, and the roles of health and safety representatives, supervisors and first aid officers.
  • Understand the purpose of job safety analyses (JSAs), safe work method statements (SWMS) and safety data sheets (SDS).
  • Read and understand common safety signs on site.
  • Select, fit and care for the personal protective equipment (PPE) used for construction work.
  • Understand what to do in an emergency or incident on site.
  • Understand why work that requires a High Risk Work licence needs separate training and licensing.

Training and assessment

Your trainer will walk you through each topic, and you can ask questions as you go. Assessment includes identifying and reporting construction hazards, explaining how risks can be reduced and showing how to select and fit PPE.

You need to demonstrate the required skills and knowledge to be assessed as competent. Attendance alone does not result in a Statement of Attainment.

What you need before attending

  • A Unique Student Identifier (USI). You can create or find yours at usi.gov.au .
  • Identification. Our team will confirm what you need for enrolment.
  • Enclosed footwear and suitable clothing if your booking includes any practical activities.
  • Any required pre-course work completed. Check your booking instructions.

You will need to understand safety instructions, communicate with the trainer and complete the required assessment. Please discuss language, literacy or numeracy support or accessibility needs with us before booking. Our team will also confirm the minimum age and any other enrolment requirements.
