Who is this course for?

This course is for workers whose duties involve entering and working in confined spaces. You might need it for maintenance, construction, utilities, manufacturing or other work where confined space entry is part of the task.

Tanks, vessels, pits and other enclosed areas can present serious hazards. Whether an area is a confined space depends on its characteristics and risks, not simply its size or name.

If your employer has asked for a confined space ticket, check the required unit code before booking. Tell us about your role and any additional training your site requires.

What you will learn

  • Identify the work requirements and recognise confined space hazards.
  • Read and follow entry permits, work instructions and safety procedures.
  • Understand the controls required before entry, including isolation and atmospheric safety checks.
  • Select and inspect the equipment and personal protective equipment required for the task.
  • Understand communication arrangements and the role of the standby person.
  • Enter, carry out the work and leave the confined space according to the permit and workplace procedures.
  • Recognise changing conditions and respond to instructions to stop work or leave the space.
  • Understand emergency arrangements and why rescue must be planned before entry.
  • Complete the required checks, equipment care and documentation after the work.

Practical training and assessment

Your training combines explanations with practical activities. You will practise following entry procedures, using the required equipment and communicating during the task.

Assessment includes knowledge questions and observation of your practical skills. You need to demonstrate the required skills and knowledge to be assessed as competent. Attendance alone does not result in a Statement of Attainment.

Do you also need gas testing training?

Your employer may require MSMWHS217 – Gas test atmospheres as well as confined space entry training. This is a separate unit of competency.

The confined space course listed on this page is RIIWHS202E – Enter and work in confined spaces. Do not assume it includes a separate gas testing qualification. Tell us if you need both units so we can confirm the training arrangement and price before you book.

What you need before attending

  • A Unique Student Identifier (USI). You can create or find yours at usi.gov.au .
  • Identification. Our team will confirm what you need for enrolment.
  • Enclosed footwear and suitable work clothing for the practical activities.
  • Any required pre-course work completed. Check your booking instructions.

You will need to understand safety instructions, communicate with the trainer and complete the required assessment. Please discuss language, literacy or numeracy support, accessibility needs or concerns about the practical activities with us before booking.

If you are uncomfortable in enclosed spaces or have a health condition that may affect participation, speak with our team before enrolling. We will explain the practical activities and discuss your needs. Our team will also confirm the minimum age and any other enrolment requirements.

Frequently asked questions

How much does confined space training cost?

The advertised course price is $275 for training and assessment for RIIWHS202E – Enter and work in confined spaces. Contact our team to confirm your date, payment arrangements and the price of any additional units you need.

How long does the course take?

Our team will confirm the duration, arrival time and any pre-course study before you book, so you can plan your day.

Do I receive a confined space licence?

Successful completion results in a Statement of Attainment for the unit of competency, rather than a WHSQ High Risk Work licence. This is often called a confined space ticket or certificate.

Does this course include gas testing?

Atmospheric safety is part of understanding confined space entry. However, a separate Statement of Attainment for MSMWHS217 – Gas test atmospheres is only issued if you enrol in and successfully complete that unit as well. Ask us if your workplace requires both.

Does this qualify me to perform confined space rescue?

This is an entry and work course, not a specialist confined space rescue qualification. It covers understanding emergency arrangements. If your role includes rescue duties, tell us so we can discuss the additional training you may need.

Do I need previous experience?

Tell us about your experience when you enquire. We will discuss whether this course suits your needs and any preparation or support you may require.

Can I enter any confined space after completing the course?

Training is one part of safe entry. You must still follow the workplace's authorisation, permit, risk controls and emergency procedures for the particular space and task.

Will my employer accept the certificate?

Confirm the required unit codes and any requirements for recent training with your employer or site before booking. Some roles require additional units or site-specific training.

Enquire about confined space training

Tell us your preferred location, whether you need gas testing as well, and whether you are booking for yourself or a business. We will help you confirm the course details and available dates.
