Who is this course for?

This course is for people who need to operate an order-picking forklift truck at work. These machines are commonly used to pick stock from warehouse racking.

You may be starting a warehouse role, expanding your equipment skills or completing training requested by your employer. Tell us whether you are new to order pickers or already have operating experience.

What is an order-picking forklift?

On an order-picking forklift, the operator's controls rise with the load carriage. The operator is lifted to access stock at different levels.

This is different from a standard forklift, where the operator remains in the driving position while the forks rise. The elevated operating position introduces additional hazards and requires the appropriate training and licence.

What you will learn

  • Plan the task and identify hazards in the operating area.
  • Carry out pre-start inspections and report equipment defects.
  • Identify controls, safety devices and emergency procedures.
  • Understand the data plate, load capacity and load stability.
  • Follow the required fall protection procedures and inspect the equipment used.
  • Manoeuvre safely around racking, pedestrians and other equipment.
  • Raise and lower the operator platform safely.
  • Pick, position and secure loads within the machine's limits.
  • Maintain safe clearances and communicate with others.
  • Park, shut down and secure the order picker after use.

Training and assessment

Your training combines theory with practical order picker operation. You will review safe work procedures, practise the required tasks and prepare for assessment.

The licensing assessment includes knowledge, calculations and practical performance. It is conducted by a WHSQ-authorised assessor. You must demonstrate the required knowledge and safe operating skills to pass.

Attendance alone does not result in a licence. Our team will explain the training timetable, assessment arrangements and what happens if further training or reassessment is needed.

LO and LF — which licence do you need?

LO is the High Risk Work licence class for an order-picking forklift truck. LF is the class for a standard forklift truck.

An LF licence does not authorise you to operate an order picker, and an LO licence does not replace an LF licence. Some warehouse jobs require both.

If you need both classes, ask our team about standard forklift licence training as well as the order picker course.

What you need before attending

  • Evidence of identity. Bring the documents required for High Risk Work assessment. Our team will explain the requirements before your assessment.
  • A Unique Student Identifier (USI). You can create or find yours at usi.gov.au .
  • Any required pre-course study completed. Follow the instructions sent with your booking.
  • Enclosed footwear and suitable work clothing for practical training.
  • Your existing High Risk Work licence, if you hold one. Tell us if you intend to add LO to an existing licence.

You must be at least 18 years old to apply for a High Risk Work licence. You will also need to understand safety instructions, communicate in English and complete the required written and calculation assessments.

Please discuss language, literacy or numeracy support, accessibility needs or concerns about working at height before booking. We can explain the practical activities and assessment requirements.

What happens after you pass?

After successfully completing the required training and assessments, you receive the documentation needed for your licence application.

You then apply to Workplace Health and Safety Queensland for your LO High Risk Work licence, or to add LO to your existing licence. The government application fee is paid separately.

Follow the application instructions and deadlines provided after assessment. Our team will explain the next steps and the documents you need to keep.
