Who is this course for?

This course is for workers who use pedestrian-operated stackers to move, lift and stack palletised goods. It may suit warehouse, retail, manufacturing and dispatch staff.

You might be learning to use a walkie stacker for the first time, refreshing previous training or completing training requested by your employer. Tell us about your experience so we can discuss the preparation and practical support you need.

Do you need a licence for a walkie stacker?

A genuinely pedestrian-operated walkie stacker does not require an LF High Risk Work licence in Queensland. However, operators still need appropriate training, instruction and supervision to use it safely.

The machine's design matters. Do not assume that a machine is licence-exempt simply because it is described as a stacker. If it has a ride-on platform or another onboard operating position, confirm the licensing requirements for that particular machine.

Send us the machine's make, model and a photograph if you are unsure whether this course is suitable.

What you will learn

  • Identify the machine's controls, safety features and operating limits.
  • Carry out pre-start checks and report defects.
  • Check the work area for pedestrians, obstructions, damaged floors, ramps and loading dock edges.
  • Read the capacity information and assess the weight and stability of a load.
  • Position the forks correctly and pick up compatible pallets safely.
  • Travel and manoeuvre with a load while maintaining a safe operating position.
  • Recognise trapping and crushing hazards around the machine, walls and racking.
  • Lift and place loads within the machine's limits.
  • Follow the manufacturer's instructions for slopes, travel and emergency controls.
  • Park, lower the forks, shut down and secure the machine after use.
  • Follow the correct battery charging and equipment care procedures.

Training and practical competency

Understanding the controls is only part of safe operation. You also need to use the machine safely with loads, around other people and within your workplace's conditions.

Before booking, confirm how practical training and any competency assessment are included or arranged. Completing theory learning alone does not demonstrate your ability to operate the equipment safely.

Your employer should also arrange familiarisation with the actual machine and the workplace's traffic, loading and storage procedures. Training on one model does not remove the need to understand another model's controls and limitations.

What you need before starting

  • The machine details. Tell us the make, model and whether it is pedestrian-operated or has a ride-on position.
  • Your employer's requirements. Send any required training or assessment criteria before booking.
  • Suitable footwear and work clothing for any practical activities. Follow your booking instructions and workplace PPE requirements.
  • Any requested preparation completed. Our team will explain the learning and attendance requirements.

Please discuss language or literacy support, accessibility needs or concerns about the practical activities with us before booking. We will explain the course requirements and discuss your needs.
