Who is this course for?

This course is for people seeking entry into unarmed security or crowd control work. It may suit someone changing careers, looking for a new employment pathway or preparing for a security role requested by an employer.

Security work requires more than watching a doorway. You need to communicate clearly, stay aware of your surroundings, follow procedures and make sound decisions when situations change.

Tell us about your experience and the type of work you are interested in. We can explain the course and help you understand the next steps towards a licence.

What you will learn

  • Communicate effectively with colleagues, clients and members of the public.
  • Understand legal responsibilities and follow security procedures.
  • Recognise risks and select appropriate responses.
  • Patrol premises and monitor property.
  • Screen people and items, and manage access to premises.
  • Monitor individual and crowd behaviour.
  • Apply procedures for managing intoxicated people and removing people from premises.
  • Use basic defensive techniques to protect yourself and others within legal and procedural limits.
  • Respond to emergencies and follow evacuation procedures.
  • Escort and protect people and valuables.
  • Provide first aid as required by the qualification.

Practical training and assessment

Your training includes practical activities and scenarios that help you apply security procedures. You will practise communication, responding to incidents and working with others.

Assessment includes knowledge tasks and demonstrations of practical skills. You must successfully complete all required units and assessments to receive the qualification. Attendance alone is not enough.

Ask questions during training. Our goal is to help you understand the responsibilities of the role and apply what you learn.

Security training and Queensland licensing

Completing the course does not automatically give you a security licence. Licensing is managed separately by the Queensland Office of Fair Trading.

Before enrolling, check the requirements for the licence activities you want to apply for. Training is one part of the application process; eligibility and suitability requirements also apply. Course completion does not guarantee licence approval.

Visit the Queensland Government security industry licensing information for current requirements.
