Who is this course for?

This course is for people who need to operate elevating work platforms for tasks such as maintenance, installation, construction, painting or warehouse work. You might be new to the equipment or need evidence of training for your employer or a particular site.

Tell us whether you need scissor lift training, boom lift training or both. We will help you confirm that your course covers the equipment you intend to use.

What you will learn

  • Identify the work requirements and choose equipment suitable for the task.
  • Check the work area for hazards, including uneven ground, overhead obstructions, powerlines and nearby people.
  • Read the machine's operating information and understand its rated capacity and limitations.
  • Carry out pre-start inspections and report defects.
  • Identify and use platform controls, ground controls and emergency lowering arrangements.
  • Position and operate the machine safely within its limits.
  • Use the required personal protective equipment and follow the machine's fall protection requirements.
  • Communicate with people involved in the task and maintain a safe work area.
  • Park, shut down and secure the equipment after use.

Practical training and assessment

Your training combines explanations with practical activities on the equipment included in your course. You will practise checking the machine, using the controls and operating safely. Ask questions as you go—our trainers are here to help.

Assessment includes knowledge questions and observation of your practical skills. You need to demonstrate the required skills and knowledge to be assessed as competent. Attendance alone does not result in a Statement of Attainment.

Yellow Card training or a WP High Risk Work licence?

These are different training pathways. This page is for scissor lift training and boom lift training where the boom length is under 11 metres.

A boom-type elevating work platform with a boom length of 11 metres or more requires a WP High Risk Work licence. This includes a boom length of exactly 11 metres. The requirement is based on the machine's maximum boom length, not how high you intend to raise it during a particular task.

The 11-metre boom licensing threshold does not apply to scissor lifts. However, scissor lift operators still need appropriate training and instruction to use the equipment safely.

If you are unsure which course you need, send us the machine details or call 0466 090 559 before booking.

What you need before attending

  • A Unique Student Identifier (USI). You can create or find yours at usi.gov.au .
  • Identification. Our team will confirm what you need for enrolment.
  • Enclosed footwear and suitable work clothing for the practical activities.
  • Any required pre-course work completed. Check your booking instructions.

You will need to understand safety instructions, communicate with the trainer and complete the required assessment. Please discuss language, literacy or numeracy support, accessibility needs or concerns about the practical activities with us before booking.

Our team will confirm the minimum age and any other enrolment requirements. If you are uncomfortable at heights or have a condition that may affect your participation, speak with us so we can explain the practical activities and discuss your needs.

Frequently asked questions

How much does EWP training cost?

The advertised price is $275 for training and assessment. Confirm the machine categories, card arrangements and payment details with our team before booking.

How long does the course take?

Our team will confirm the duration, arrival time and any pre-course study before you book, so you can plan your day.

Is a Yellow Card the same as a High Risk Work licence?

No. An EWP operator card is evidence of training for the equipment categories recorded on it. It does not replace the WP High Risk Work licence required for boom-type EWPs with a boom length of 11 metres or more.

Does RIIHAN301E automatically include an EWPA Yellow Card?

A Statement of Attainment and an EWPA Yellow Card are separate credentials. Before booking, ask our team to confirm the card issued, the equipment categories covered and whether these meet your employer's requirements.

Does scissor lift training also cover boom lifts?

Do not assume that training on one machine covers another. Tell us which equipment you need to operate and confirm that your booking includes both machine types if required.

Do I need previous experience?

Tell us about your experience when you enquire. We will discuss whether this course suits your needs and any preparation or support you may require.

Does this include a working at heights qualification?

A separate working at heights qualification is not included simply because you complete EWP training. If your employer also requires working at heights training, ask us about completing both courses.

Can I operate any EWP after completing the course?

Your training needs to match the equipment you use. You must also follow the manufacturer's instructions, workplace procedures and any machine familiarisation or site requirements before operating.
